10 Questions With Wes Talbott

1.... who is your favorite artist?

At the moment Justin Gerard (link). I can't see that changing anytime soon, his work is top notch and has such a great style.

2.... do you offer workshops for artists?

I do not, I still consider myself to be learning a lot, although I suppose that will never change. I do help out a lot of other students at my school though and I'm always willing to give feedback on a piece. Maybe someday I'll do a workshop in the distant future.

3.... what do you like to listen to while you work?

Various audio books (usually fantasy) or Pandora, specifically bands in the range of Pendulum, Josh Garrels, Jeremy Casella, Mumford & sons, Glitch Mob and tons of other random stuff.

4.... what medium and tools do you use to create your art?

I always start with a pencil drawing and from there I usually take it into photoshop for everything else. Every once in awhile I'll break out some watercolors.

5.... during an average week how many hours a day / week do you work on creating art?

Hmm well naturally it varies, I would say in the range of to 30-40 hrs a week.

6.... are you working your dream job?

Well yes and no. My goal is to making a living off of art that I enjoy doing, which is true of what I do now, however if I were more specific, no I am not doing concept art for the next Zelda game or working for Lego XD, although I am in the process of pursuing the latter.

7.... do you feel its important for others to pursue their dream jobs?

Absolutely, set goals not limits.

8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?

Here are my websites.

My online portfolio: www.westalbott.daportfolio.com/
My DeviantArt: www.wes-talbott.deviantart.com/
My Blog: www.westalbott.blogspot.com/

As for conventions I currently only attend IlluXcon. I will actually have a table there this year so if you plan on traveling to Altoona PA I will be there. I'm planning on making it to Spectrum Live next year as well although we'll see if that actually happens.

9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?

Well I have always been artistic and for the most part have been drawing my entire life. It wasn't till I was 18 that I decided I wanted to be a professional artist though.

10.... is there anything else you would like to add or say to other artists?

Well there is always the usual advice of practice a ton. Which can't be more true. The I guess some additional Wes Talbott advice would be to always think of others first. If you want to work for someone make sure you do your best to please them. Successful art is art that achieves a purpose in the best way possible. Whether that purpose is to bring joy to the people that view it or to properly represent a company's standards. If that is your goal you will never turn in a bad piece of work and you will enjoy every piece you make because it fulfills it's purpose.
